Project Overview:

This project began with a backyard the client described as an “embarrassing waste of space.” The yard had become overrun with six-foot weeds, uneven ground and years of neglect, making it unusable and difficult to maintain.

The client wanted to transform the space within a practical budget, creating a backyard that was clean, functional and easy to maintain, while still looking great. The goal was a space they could feel proud of — somewhere to entertain friends and family and enjoy spending time outdoors.

Once clearing began, it became clear there were hidden site challenges, including buried construction debris and slab overpour from the original build that had been covered by the weeds.

To deliver the result while staying cost-effective, the design focused on simplicity, durability and strong visual contrast. A fresh Kikuyu lawn and new garden beds finished with black mulch created a clean, low-maintenance outdoor space.

Site Clearing & Preparation

The project began with a full backyard reset to remove years of overgrowth and debris.

• Removal of heavy weed growth across the yard

• Clearing buried construction debris and slab overpour

• Full site clean-up and waste removal

• Fence panel temporarily removed to allow machinery access

Access & Machinery

Access to the backyard was restricted, requiring a practical solution to move soil and materials efficiently.

• Kanga mini loader brought through side access

• Machinery used to move soil and level the yard

• Site prepared and graded ready for soil installation

Soil Installation & Levelling

To bring the yard up to the correct level, a new soil base was installed.

• 17m³ of soil installed across the backyard

• First 100mm layer spread, compacted and levelled

• Second 100mm layer installed and fine-levelled

• Final grade set 15mm below concrete edge ready for turf

Turf Installation

Once the base preparation was complete, the lawn installation could begin.

• 50sqm of premium Kikuyu turf installed

• Lawn rolled and watered to support establishment

• Edges shaped to create a clean finish against garden beds

Garden Beds & Finishing

To frame the lawn and create visual contrast, new garden beds were created.

• Garden beds formed around the lawn perimeter

• 100mm soil base installed

• Finished with 100mm black mulch
